This is one of the most elegant coastal trees in the tropics, found all across the southern Pacific and tropical Indian Ocean. Its common name is 'Beach Calophyllum'. This photo is one of my favourites, taken at Nina Bay on Hinchinbrook Island. Bernie Hyland, a botanist writes, "A characteristic tree on beaches and rocky headlands often leaning out towards the sea, obviously wishing it were somewhere else... One of the few beach trees which can withstand cyclonic winds."
