Glowing Pandanus. Hinchinbrook Island - Queensland - Australia show detail prevnext
In the distance the Hinchinbrook skyline can be seen lurking high. I took this photo in late afternoon light just as the sun was setting. The sand-flies, otherwise known as 'midgees', were ferocious. Any exposed skin became a hearty meal. The aborigines dealt with this problem by lighting fires and sitting downwind from them. This way the smoke would drive away the midgees. Just to the right of where this photograph was taken, an Aboriginal shell midden stands. An ancient reminder that the Bandjin people made this harsh environment thier home, over thousands of years.
